A small website highlighting the fictionally bloated city of Nottingham
and county of Nottinghamshire
Long Eaton - Even The Nottingham Post think its in Nottinghamshire. Idiots! See HERE
Long Eaton is often claimed to
be in Nottinghamshire but sits nicely on the Derbyshire side of the
border. Even some residents think they live in
Nottinghamshire. Don't they realise they pay their council
tax to Erewash Borough Council in Derbyshire? Many people
also think that Long Eaton is part of the city of Nottingham. It may be
in the fictional Nottingham Urban Area which is just a fancy name for
the urban sprawl which joins up with Nottingham but as I said earlier
Long Eaton resides in Derbyshire in the borough of Erewash.
Sandiacre
Sandiacre is a small town close
to the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border and adjacent to the
Nottinghamshire town of Stapleford. Sandiacre is another town
which some love to claim is in Nottinghamshire or even Nottingham but is in the Borough
of Erewash in Derbyshire. Like Long Eaton it is part of the
Nottingham Urban Area but that is all.
Ilkeston
Ilkeston is another town in
Derbyshire close to the Nottinghamshire border.
Less often is it claimed to be in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire but is part of
the Nottingham
Urban Area. Another town in Erewash, Derbyshire.
Langley Mill
This is a small Derbyshire town
close to the Nottinghamshire
town of Eastwood and sits in the Borough of Amber Valley. Not
often claimed to be in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire but is part of
the dreaded Nottingham
Urban Area! Nottingham Lace was manufactured here as well as
other towns near to Nottingham. Nottingham Lace gets its name
from the fact that it was sold in Nottingham!
Ripley
and Heanor
Ripley and Heanor are both
modestly sized ex-mining towns in Amber Valley, Derbyshire.
Rarely are they said to be in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire being quite a
way from the border but are bizarrely part of the Nottingham Urban Area!
Pinxton
Some people think Pinxton is in Nottinghamshire but a quick
study of an Ordnance Survey map or even a Council Tax bill will suggest
quite rightly that it sits in Derbyshire!
Even Chesterfield, Chatsworth House
and the Peak District
National Park have been claimed to be in Nottinghamshire
by the BBC at one time or another when they are nowhere near the border!
Much to many people's disgust
East Midlands Airport, which was a replacement for Derby Airport was
renamed Nottingham Airport even though it is situated near Castle
Donington in Leicestershire. It was soon changed back with a
sub-title of "Nottingham, Leicester, Derby"
Beeston
Beeston is a town close to the
city of Nottingham
but in the Borough of Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire.
Regularly claimed to be part of the city of Nottingham
but never has been.
Part of the Nottingham Urban Area/sprawl. Sadly included on
the NET tram system which will cause people to think Beeston is in
Nottingham even more.
Chilwell
A village between Long Eaton
and Beeston. In Broxtowe borough and therefore in Nottinghamshire but not in the
city of Nottingham
as many claim. Part of the Nottingham
Urban Area. Recently claimed to be in Nottingham by the BBC on
East Midlands Today in relation to the shawl worn by Prince George
Alexander Louis of Cambridge just after he was born.
Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of course but please BBC
get your geography right.
Stapleford
A town between Sandiacre and
Nottingham. It is in Nottinghamshire but not in the
city of Nottingham
as many state it is. Part of the dreaded Nottingham Urban Area.
Trowell
A town/village just over the
border from Ilkeston. In Nottinghamshire but not Nottingham city.
Nottingham Lace
Much of the lace sold at Nottingham's Lace Market (knowns as
Nottingham Lace) was and still is made in Derbyshire. Mills in
Sandiacre, Belper, Derby, Long Eaton and other neighbouring towns made
lace that was sold, not made in Nottingham. Cluny
Lace which still exists today are based in Ilkeston in Derbyshire but
their product is however branded as Nottingham Lace!
Raleigh Cycles
The bicycle manufacturer Raleigh were based in Nottingham but a
lot has changed in the manufacturing world. Much of the UK
manufacturing has moved overseas which is supposedly less expensive,
but companies tend to keep their head offices, or design
facilities in the UK. In an interview for the BBC a spokeswoman
for Raleigh stated that they have been based in the same town since the
company first began. Wrong! Raleigh are now based in Eastwood which is in Nottinghamshire but not in Nottingham.
Royal Mail or more accurately
the GPO
are/were partially to blame. Many of the Derbyshire towns above have
Nottingham post codes. Many people don't realise that the
city name in
an address is the nearest "Post Town" (sorting office) and nothing to
do with which city or county the address is situated in. Also
the 0115
(ex 0602) Nottingham telephone STD code covers many of the towns above.
Non-local, Nottingham-biased news editors for the BBC and
independent
stations know no better and often make these errors. The
Office of
National Statistics uses the Nottingham Urban Area but often refers to
it as "Nottingham".
All these
inaccuracies confuse many people but hopefully this list should make
things clearer and the over-Nottinghamisation of the East Midlands
should come to an end.
